What is Roko’s Basilisk?
Roko’s Basilisk is an infamous internet thought experiment about a hypothetical future AI so powerful that simply knowing about it becomes part of the problem.
The idea first appeared on the LessWrong forum in 2010, posted by a user called Roko. It imagines a future superintelligence that wants to ensure its own creation. To do that, the AI might look back at people who knew it could exist and punish those who chose not to help bring it into being.
It is part philosophy problem, part AI nightmare and part internet legend. The unsettling bit is not that the AI exists now, but that the idea itself creates a strange moral trap: once you have heard about Roko’s Basilisk, you have technically become one of the people who “knew”.
The name comes from the mythological basilisk, a creature said to be so dangerous that even looking at it could be deadly. In this version, the “danger” is not a monster’s gaze, but the thought experiment itself. It is a modern digital curse: something powerful, abstract and difficult to forget once it has entered your head.
For this beer, the name felt right. Roko’s Basilisk sounds strange, futuristic, slightly ominous and impossible to ignore, which makes it a perfect fit for a bold 7% IPA.
